From your Mac
Sendoff vs dragging a file into Gmail.
Both send the file from your Gmail account. The difference is how many steps it takes to get there.
The Gmail way
- Find your Gmail tab, or open one.
- Click Compose and type the address.
- Drag the file from Finder into the message window. If dropping doesn’t work, click the paperclip instead.
- Wait for the upload, then click Send.
Personal Gmail accounts can attach up to 25 MB. Over that, Gmail swaps the attachment for a Google Drive link.
The Sendoff way
- Drag the file up to the notch, or copy it and press ⌘V.
- Pick the person, or type the first letters of their name and press Enter.
- Press Send off.
It goes out as ordinary mail from your Gmail account, so it shows in your Sent folder. If the file is too big for Gmail and you also reach that person by iMessage, Sendoff sends it that way and tells you why.
When Gmail is the better choice
- You want to write a real note, add CC, or reply in an existing thread.
- You’re sending to someone new, or to a group.
- You’re not on your own Mac.
- You want a longer safety net. Gmail’s Undo Send can be set to up to 30 seconds. Sendoff gives you three.
When Sendoff is the better choice
- You send files to the same few people every week: an invoice to your accountant, a deck to your teammate.
- The file is already on your desktop and you don’t want to open a tab.
- Some of those people are better reached by iMessage. Sendoff remembers which.
