From your Mac
Email a file from your Mac.
A PDF for your accountant, a deck for your teammate. Three ways to send it, from fastest to most familiar.
Share from Finder
- Select the file in Finder.
- Click the Share button in the toolbar, then choose Mail.
- A new message opens with the file attached. Add the address and click Send.
This uses Apple Mail. If your email is Gmail, add your Google account in Mail first.
Drop it on Mail in the Dock
Drag the file onto the Mail icon in your Dock. Mail opens a new message with it attached.
Attach it in Gmail
- Open Gmail in your browser and click Compose.
- Click the paperclip, or drag the file into the message window.
- Add the address and click Send.
Turn on Undo Send in Gmail settings to get up to 30 seconds to take a message back.
Folders and big files
To send a folder, Control-click it in Finder and choose Compress, then send the .zip. See Email a folder from your Mac. Personal Gmail caps attachments at 25 MB (more on the limit). For bigger files, see File too large for Gmail?
Sending a Pages or Keynote file to someone without a Mac? Send it as a PDF, Word or PowerPoint file. See Send a Pages document and Email a Keynote presentation.
Sending photos? See How to email photos from your Mac.
Do it in a few keystrokes with Sendoff
If you send to the same few people, Sendoff skips the compose window. Drag the file to the notch, type “acc”, then Enter, Enter. It goes out as ordinary mail from your Gmail account, so it shows in your Sent folder. Wrong person? Undo within three seconds.
