From your Mac
Dropover vs Yoink vs Dropzone.
All three make dragging files on a Mac easier. Dropover and Yoink hold files on a shelf. Dropzone gives you a grid of actions to drop on. Details are from each app's own site.
The short answer
- Dropover if you want a shelf that can also share, upload and run actions.
- Yoink if you want a simple shelf at the edge of the screen that moves and copies like Finder.
- Dropzone 5 if you’d rather drop a file straight on an action, like move, AirDrop or upload.
Side by side
- How it opens. Dropover: shake the pointer while dragging, or use a shortcut. Yoink: it slides out at the edge of the screen when you start dragging, or at the pointer. Dropzone: a grid of actions appears at the top of the screen when you drag.
- Holding files. Dropover: shelves you can name, color, pin and reopen. Yoink: the shelf is the whole app. Dropzone: its Drop Bar holds files for later.
- Sharing. Dropover: Mail, Messages, AirDrop or anything in the Share menu, plus cloud uploads with a public link. Yoink: you drag files out to wherever they go. Dropzone: AirDrop, SFTP and other upload actions.
- Keyboard. Dropover: a shortcut for a new shelf, and a Command Bar. Yoink: one shortcut shows it, recalls files you dragged out, or saves the clipboard. Dropzone: F3 opens it from any app, then shortcuts run actions.
- Automation. Dropover: custom actions, scripts, Siri Shortcuts, Alfred and Raycast. Yoink: Terminal and Automator. Dropzone: a
dzcommand for Terminal, and add-on actions you can write in Ruby or Python. - Extras. Dropover: drop files on the notch to start a shelf. Yoink: clipboard history, and Handoff with Yoink for iPhone and iPad. Dropzone: multiple grids for different workflows.
- Requires. Dropover: macOS 13 or later. Yoink: macOS 10.13 or later. Dropzone 5: macOS 13 or later. All three are on the Mac App Store.
Dropover
Dropover: collect files, links, text or images on a shelf, then move them in one go. You can preview, rename and reorder them on the shelf, resize images, extract text or make a ZIP. It uploads to Dropover Cloud, iCloud Drive, Google Drive, OneDrive and more, and copies the link.
Yoink
Yoink: drag a file to it, go where the file belongs, drag it out. Hold Option to copy or Command to move, like Finder. You can tell it to stay hidden in apps where you don’t need it.
Dropzone 5
Dropzone 5: the actions are the main idea. Drop a file on one to move, copy, rename, AirDrop, upload or run a Shortcut, and install more from inside the app. Searching for Dropzone 4? Dropzone 5 is the current version.
What none of them does
All three help a file get somewhere. None of them knows who it’s for. If you’re dragging it into an email or a text to the same few people, you still open Mail or Messages and find the person.
Where Sendoff fits
Sendoff is a Mac app that lives in the notch and does that last step. Drop the file, pick the person, press Send off.
- Your regulars come first, ranked by how often you send to them: your accountant, your teammate, your mom.
- It remembers whether each person gets Gmail or iMessage. Slack is coming soon.
- It routes around what won’t work: a 48 MB video for someone you usually email goes by iMessage instead.
- It’s all keyboard, with 3 seconds to undo.
Sendoff isn’t a shelf, so you may want both. For more shelf apps, like Droppy and OpenShelf, see Dropover alternatives for Mac. For notch apps, see MacBook notch apps.
