From your Mac
Sign a PDF on a Mac.
Preview, the app that opens PDFs on your Mac, can fill out forms and add your signature. No printing, no scanning, nothing to install.
Fill out the form
- Open the PDF in Preview.
- Click a field and type.
- If you can’t type into the form, add a text box from the Markup toolbar instead.
Some forms offer an AutoFill Form button above the PDF, which fills in your name and address from your card in Contacts. Not every PDF supports it.
Make your signature
Open the PDF, show the Markup toolbar, then click the Sign button. Pick one way to capture your signature:
- Trackpad: click Trackpad, click the text as prompted, sign with your finger, press any key, then click Done.
- Camera: click Camera, hold your signature on white paper up to your Mac’s camera, level with the blue line, then click Done.
- iPhone or iPad: click Select Device, sign on the device with your finger (or Apple Pencil on iPad), then tap Done.
You only do this once. With iCloud Drive on, your signatures show up on your other Macs too.
Sign it
- Click the Sign button and choose your signature.
- Drag it into place and use the handles to resize it.
- Save the PDF.
Send it back
If the PDF came by email in Mail, double-click the attachment to open it in Preview, fill it out and sign it, then choose File > Save and pick Reply to [sender] or New Mail Message. Mail opens a new email with the signed PDF already attached.
Using Gmail or Messages instead? Attach the saved PDF like any other file. See Send a PDF from your Mac, and if it’s too big, Reduce a PDF’s size on your Mac.
