From your Mac

Unsend an email on a Mac.

You usually have seconds, not minutes. Undo Send holds the email back for a short delay, so you have to act fast, in the app you sent it from.

How long you get

  • Apple Mail: 10 seconds by default. You can change it or turn it off.
  • Gmail in your browser: 5, 10, 20 or 30 seconds, your choice.
  • Outlook for Mac: a delay you set, up to 120 seconds. Recall only works for work or school accounts in the same organization.

Apple Mail

Right after sending, click Undo Send at the bottom of the sidebar, or choose Edit > Undo.

Want more time? Choose Mail > Settings, click Composing, and use the “Undo send delay” pop-up menu. Apple notes Undo Send doesn’t work for emails with large attachments sent by Mail Drop.

Gmail

  1. Right after sending, look for “Message sent” in the bottom left.
  2. Click Undo.

Want more time? Click Settings, then See all settings. Next to Undo Send, pick a cancellation period of 5, 10, 20 or 30 seconds, then click Save changes at the bottom.

Outlook for Mac

Undo Send: choose Outlook > Settings > Composing and set a delay. After you send, click Undo. Microsoft says this is for Microsoft 365 subscriptions and Outlook.com accounts.

Recall: open the message from Sent and click Recall (or Control-click it and choose Recall). It only works if you and the other person both have Microsoft 365 work or school accounts in the same organization. Mail sent to Gmail, Hotmail or live.com can’t be recalled. A Message Recall Report tells you if it worked.
